Metabolizing the Infinite: A Somatic Approach to 5-MeO-DMT Integration
Lady Bird is a dedicated Integration Coach and a vital extension of the Enfold ecosystem. Having developed a deep relationship with 5-MeO-DMT, she understands how different this medicine is compared to other psychedelics, and how integration can sometimes feel disorienting or destabilizing. Because her trauma-informed, body-centered approach perfectly aligns with how we work, we refer many of our guests directly to her to help them hold the magnitude and complexity of their experience, find the gems, and weave them into everyday life. The following piece is written by her.
The ceremony ends, but the journey has only just begun.
You’ve experienced the ineffable power of 5-MeO-DMT. Maybe you merged with the sea of everything, touched the void, or felt the overwhelming embrace of universal love. It’s big. It’s potent. And as you settle back into daily life—traffic, emails, cooking dinner—you may notice that the experience isn’t neatly “over.” It may feel like the medicine is still working on you.
This isn’t your imagination. It’s a physiological reality.
I see psychedelic experiences—especially those with 5-MeO-DMT—not simply as mental shifts, but as profound somatic events. Over years of working with psychedelics and embodiment, I’ve come to understand that integration is largely about how the physical and energetic body metabolizes what happened.
From the perspective of the Bodymind Bridge Somatic Hypnotherapy model, this ongoing process can be understood as the natural unfolding of Release and Reorganization, where the bodymind metabolizes and integrates profound experiences of deep healing.
It’s messy. It’s magical. It’s part science, part spirit. And it’s exactly where the real work begins.

The 10/90 Split: Who Is Actually Integrating?
To understand what happens after a retreat, we can get curious about who had the experience.
Here’s a well-established scientific theory that still amazes me: consciousness lives in every cell of our bodies. Astoundingly, only about 10% of your consciousness resides in the “thinking mind.” This is your beta brainwave state—the narrator, the planner, the worrier, the one who tries to “figure everything out.”
The other 90%? That’s your subconscious—also known as the bodymind. The bodymind communicates through sensation, imagery, intuition, and felt experience. It lives in alpha, theta, and delta states—the same states accessed in dreams, nature immersion, hypnotherapy, deep meditation, and, of course, psychedelics.
Psychedelics like 5-MeO-DMT open a doorway to this vast inner world, inviting energy to move in ways our rational minds cannot anticipate. The medicine acts as a catalyst, shaking up deeply held energetic patterns stored in your cellular structure. It’s like a full-system reboot. Or, as Steve puts it, “dynamite in the dam.”
Integration, then, is not a task for the intellect alone, but an unfolding dance between conscious awareness and the subtle, subconscious layers of our being.
So when you return from that massive experience, there can be a mismatch: your bodymind has upgraded to a new frequency, while your 10% thinking mind is still running the old operating system.
That friction? That’s integration.
The Medicine as Catalyst: Energy in Motion
5-MeO-DMT moves enormous amounts of energy through the system. During a session, it can dislodge old trauma, stagnant emotions, and limiting beliefs stored in your nervous system and connective tissue.
When the acute effects end, that energy doesn’t just disappear. The areas holding lower vibrations—fear, shame, grief—are given the opportunity to shift and hold a different story.
Integration isn’t about staying in a permanently elevated state. It’s about allowing your system to process, release, and reorganize after such a profound energetic impact. Journaling and talking are hugely supportive, but somatically speaking, integration is largely physiological. Your body is actively recalibrating, moving what no longer fits your expanded awareness up and out.

Understanding Releases as Metabolism
Think of it like eating a nutrient-rich meal. Your body has to digest it, absorb what’s useful, and eliminate what isn’t. If you tried to stop digestion simply because you heard your stomach growl, you’d get sick.
Your system processes energies from a psychedelic experience in the same way.
As your bodymind metabolizes the sheer volume of energetic information from 5-MeO-DMT, it produces “waste”—old patterns and emotions ready to leave. The expulsion of this energy is a Release.
Releases can be baffling if you don’t know what they are. One moment you feel radiant, the next you’re anxious, achy, emotional, or confused. The thinking mind panics:
“I’m going backward.”
“Something is wrong.”
But a release doesn’t mean something is wrong. It means something is leaving. It means the healing is working.
The Four Types of Releases
Let’s explore the four main types of releases. Knowing them can help you stay grounded when the waves come.
-
Mental Releases
Familiar thoughts and beliefs may resurface. Instead of engaging or resisting, notice them, recognizing that the mind may be letting go of familiar grooves—a bit like exhaling stale air. They are not truths. They are not “you.” They are energetic debris. Let them pass.
-
Emotional Releases
Emotion may well up seemingly without cause. Tears, laughter, anger, or grief may surface unexpectedly—crying while washing dishes, a burst of rage at a small frustration, or a wave of loneliness out of nowhere.
If this happens, let it. You can even encourage it, for example, by listening to a song that helps you release. This is stored emotion metabolizing. 5-MeO-DMT often unlocks emotional “cysts” buried deep in the bodymind. When they release, they naturally pass through conscious awareness. It’s not regression—it’s detox.
-
Physical Releases
Integration often works through the body. You may notice:
-
- Sudden fatigue or flu-like heaviness
- Ringing in the ears
- Trembling (especially at the core)
- Nausea or appetite shifts
- Congestion
- Hot or cold flashes
- Sudden fatigue or flu-like heaviness
These may signal that your system is reorganizing internally on a cellular level. These are the physical “construction zones.” If nothing comes up physically, that’s okay too.
-
Greater World Releases
Your internal shifts can ripple outward. You may notice:
-
- Synchronicities
- New connections appearing
- Incongruence with, or aversion toward, longer-held relationships
- Shifts in work dynamics
- Different sensitivities in environments, topics, or conversations
- Shifts in desire
- Synchronicities
As your internal landscape changes, your external world reorients. Sometimes subtly, other times dramatically. It’s your life making space for your expanded capacity.

Cellular Recalibration
Why does this process unfold over days, weeks, or months?
Because consciousness isn’t separate from the body—it’s woven into every cell. The timeline and process is unique to each person.
A 5-MeO-DMT experience bathes your system in high-frequency energy. Think of it like a phone updating its operating system: screens flicker, apps glitch, things run slowly. The system is rewriting its own code.
Your body does the same. It reorganizes, recalibrates, and gives old, denser emotional patterns the chance to move and change. Releases are a sign of recalibration in motion.
Navigating the Reorganization Phase
The key to integrating isn’t fixing yourself—it’s recognition.
When you’re in the middle of a release—feeling sick, sad, overwhelmed, or anxious days or weeks later—pause. Breathe. Place a hand on your heart and say:
“I recognize this is a release.”
Recognition shifts everything. It stops identification. It moves you from fighting the process to partnering with it. It frees the bodymind to do what it knows how to do.
Practical Support for This Phase
I like to think of this window of time as a river. Let’s imagine your life is a river, a current moving in a direction. 5-MeO-DMT is like a sudden rush of snowmelt quickening the current. You may notice times when you smash into rocks or other times when you glide along the riverbank. Pay attention to these physical sensations. Create distance and boundaries from the things that feel like rocks, and move closer to the things and people that flow and feel in harmony. I believe this allows your bodymind to guide you in the direction of your true self.
- Slow down when needed. Your system is doing heavy internal work. Rest is medicine. Rituals of basic self-care are especially helpful now.
- Move when you feel the urge. Find movement that supports the ongoing movement of energies and thoughts—shaking, dancing, stretching, running, screaming, even silent screaming.
- Hydrate. Water helps move physical, emotional, and energetic toxins through your system.
- Trust the intelligence. Your bodymind knows exactly how to heal you. Your job is to create space for it to do so.
- Don’t get stuck in fix mode. You don’t need to analyze, interpret, or correct the release. It’s temporary weather.

Embracing the New You
The period of Release and Reorganization isn’t a setback or a punishment—it’s a transition. It’s the bridge between who you were and who you are becoming. It may not be glamorous, but it is a gift.
By understanding the metabolic mechanics of integration, you can meet this phase with trust, steadiness, and self-compassion. Perhaps you can even stop resisting the waves and begin trusting the tide.
I like to believe that your body and soul are working together in perfect intelligence to bring you home to yourself. Trust the process. You are expanding into greater capacity, deeper love, and truer alignment with yourself and others.
You’ve got this. And if you doubt that you do, reach out. We’ve got you too.
